Luggage, bikes and pets on LNER

Long-distance trains fill up with suitcases, rucksacks and bikes, and space is limited. LNER publishes clear rules on how much you can bring and where it should go, and it requires a reservation for every full-size bike.

The rules below are taken from LNER's own luggage, cycling and pets pages as of September 2026. If you are travelling on another operator's train for part of your journey, check that company's rules too, because they can differ.

Your luggage allowance

Each passenger can bring up to three items: one large suitcase, one carry-on bag and one small bag such as a handbag or laptop case. Only bring what you can lift yourself — LNER staff will not lift heavy bags for you.

The largest bag LNER allows on its trains is 90 × 70 × 30 cm.

  • Small bags (backpacks, handbags, small cases): under your seat
  • Medium bags (holdalls, cabin-size cases): in the overhead racks or in the gaps between some seats
  • Large suitcases (up to 80 × 57 × 30 cm) and heavy items: in the racks at the ends of each coach, stored on their side
  • Very large items: ask a member of staff, as they may need to go in a dedicated storage area

Tips for boarding with luggage

If you have a lot of luggage, LNER asks you to let other passengers board first so that queues do not build up at the doors. Nine-carriage Azumas also have luggage cupboards in coaches B and L. Allow extra time before your stop to collect your bags and get to the door.

Pushchairs must be folded before boarding and stored in a luggage rack, a cupboard or a gap between seats, not in the aisle or doorway.

Bikes: reservations are compulsory

Taking a bike on an LNER train is free, but you must book a bike space for every LNER train you use. Spaces are limited and you may be refused boarding without a reservation. You can add a bike reservation when you book on LNER's website or app, add one later through your LNER account, or ask at an LNER travel centre. Online bookings are limited to one bike per customer.

Arrive at least ten minutes before departure, find the bike storage area shown on your reservation and secure the bike with the straps or brackets provided. Passenger Assist cannot be booked to help with bikes.

  • Maximum weight: 25 kg
  • Maximum length: 200 cm
  • Maximum tyre width: 8.5 cm
  • Maximum handlebar width: 85 cm

Where the bike spaces are

On a five-carriage Azuma there are two spaces, in coach K or D. A nine-carriage Azuma has four spaces in coach K. A ten-carriage Azuma has two spaces in coach K and two in coach D. Your reservation will tell you which coach to go to.

Folding bikes, e-bikes and e-scooters

Folding bikes (Brompton-style) can travel with your luggage without a reservation, as long as they are folded before you board and stay folded until you are off the train.

Electric bikes are allowed if they weigh under 25 kg and have a reservation, but you cannot charge them on board. E-scooters are not permitted on LNER trains, and neither are petrol-powered scooters or mopeds. Mobility aids are allowed.

Non-folding bikes cannot be carried on replacement road coaches if your train is disrupted.

Travelling with pets

You can take up to two dogs, cats or other small domestic animals free of charge. Keep them and any carriers out of the aisle, and keep dogs on a lead and off the seats. Additional pets may be charged up to £5 each per journey.

If you are travelling with an assistance dog and also need assistance, let LNER's Assisted Travel team know in advance.
