Railcards for LNER journeys

A Railcard is one of the easiest ways to cut the cost of travelling on LNER routes. Most give a third off eligible fares, and on a long journey such as London to Edinburgh a single trip can save more than the card costs.

Railcards are national products, sold through the official Railcards website, train company websites and staffed stations, and they work with all train companies in Great Britain, including LNER. The details below come from the official Railcards website as of September 2026. Prices and conditions can change, so check the official page for your card before you buy.

The national Railcards at a glance

There are nine national Railcards. Most cost £35 for a year; the Disabled Persons Railcard costs £20. Several can also be bought as a three-year card for £80.

  • 16-17 Saver — ages 16 and 17; 50% off Standard Anytime, Off-Peak and Advance tickets and Season tickets; £35 for one year
  • 16-25 Railcard — ages 16 to 25, plus mature students aged 26 and over in full-time education; one third off; £35 a year or £80 for three years
  • 26-30 Railcard — ages 26 to 30; one third off; £35, one-year and digital only
  • Senior Railcard — aged 60 or over; one third off; £35 a year or £80 for three years
  • Two Together Railcard — two named people aged 16 or over travelling together; one third off both tickets; £35 a year
  • Family & Friends Railcard — up to four adults save a third and up to four children aged 5 to 15 save 60% when travelling together; £35 a year or £80 for three years
  • Network Railcard — anyone aged 16 or over; one third off in London and the South East only; £35 a year
  • Disabled Persons Railcard — people with a qualifying disability; one third off for the holder and one adult companion; £20 a year
  • Veterans Railcard — anyone who has served at least one day in the UK Armed Forces (Regular or Reserve), and eligible Merchant Mariners; one third off for the holder, a named adult companion and up to four children; £35 a year or £80 for three years

Railcards for younger travellers

The 16-17 Saver is the most generous card of all: half off Standard Anytime, Off-Peak and Advance fares and Season tickets, with no time restrictions or minimum fares. It lasts a year or until the day before your 18th birthday, whichever comes first.

The 16-25 and 26-30 Railcards both give a third off, but on weekday journeys between 04.30 and 10.00 a minimum fare of £12 applies. That minimum does not apply to Advance fares or on public holidays, and for the 16-25 card it is also lifted during July and August. The 16-25 card covers First Class Advance fares, and the 26-30 card covers First Class Advance and, on some journeys, Weekend First.

Senior and Two Together

The Senior Railcard can be used at any time of day, except for morning-peak journeys made entirely within the London and South East Network Railcard area. It covers First Class fares as well as Standard.

The Two Together Railcard is for two named people who always travel together; both must be on the same journey to get the discount. It cannot be used before 09.30 on weekdays, but there is no time limit at weekends or on public holidays.

Travelling with children

The Family & Friends Railcard can have up to two named adult holders, and at least one named adult must travel with at least one child for the discount to apply. Adults get a third off and children aged 5 to 15 get 60% off. Children under five travel free, but you can add one discounted child ticket so that the adults still qualify for their discount. The card cannot be used for morning-peak journeys wholly within the London and South East area on weekdays.

Disabled Persons and Veterans Railcards

The Disabled Persons Railcard gives a third off for the holder and one adult companion, with no time restrictions. The companion does not have to be the same person each time. Eligibility is based on receiving support for a disability or long-term condition; the Railcards website has a checklist of the qualifying criteria and the documents you need.

The Veterans Railcard gives a third off for the holder, plus a third off for a named adult companion and 60% off for up to four children travelling with them. A £12 minimum fare applies before 10.00 on weekdays, except on Advance fares, on public holidays and during July and August.

Is the Network Railcard any use on LNER?

Only for the southern end of the route. The Network Railcard is valid only within the London and South East area, and on weekdays it can be used only from 10.00. It will not discount a long-distance journey to Yorkshire, the North East or Scotland.

How much does a Railcard cost?

Most national Railcards cost £35 for one year. The Disabled Persons Railcard is £20. Three-year versions of the 16-25, Senior, Family & Friends and Veterans Railcards cost £80.

Is there a minimum fare with the 16-25 Railcard?

Yes, a £12 minimum fare applies to journeys between 04.30 and 10.00 on weekdays. It does not apply to Advance tickets, on public holidays or in July and August.

Can I buy a Railcard if I am 29?
