About Newtonmore
Newtonmore is a village of about 1,100 people in Badenoch, on the River Spey inside the Cairngorms National Park. Its station is the only one on the Highland Main Line with a single platform.
The village is home to the Highland Folk Museum, an open-air museum of more than 35 reconstructed buildings where costumed interpreters show how Highland communities lived from the 1700s to the mid-1900s. On the main street, the Clan Macpherson Museum holds relics such as the Black Chanter and tells the clan's Jacobite story.

History of the station
Newtonmore opened on 9 September 1863, when the Inverness and Perth Junction Railway completed its line between Aviemore and Pitlochry. It had two platforms either side of a passing loop, linked by a footbridge, with a goods yard to the north equipped with a five-ton crane, two signal boxes and a turntable.
The original timber buildings were destroyed by fire in April 1893 and the Highland Railway replaced them in stone the same year. A serious collision between a passenger train and a goods train here on 2 August 1894 killed one passenger. Later the station was reduced to a single platform, and although it was listed for closure in the 1980s it was reprieved.
