About Harrogate
Harrogate made its name as 'The English Spa'. Its mineral springs, rich in iron and sulphur, drew wealthy visitors seeking health cures from the Georgian era onwards, and the town's pump rooms, baths and gardens are the legacy of that boom.
You can still sample the spa heritage today: the Royal Pump Room Museum stands over what it describes as the strongest sulphur wells in Europe, and the restored Victorian Turkish Baths, dating from 1897, remain open for bathing sessions. The 17-acre Valley Gardens and the town-centre tearooms of Bettys, founded here in 1919, round off a classic day out.
LNER runs direct trains between Harrogate and London about every two hours, and the Yorkshire Dales National Park and Nidderdale are within easy reach, so Harrogate works well as a base.

History of the station
Harrogate's early railways kept their distance from the town. The York and North Midland Railway's branch from Church Fenton ended at Brunswick station, on the edge of the Stray, where the first train arrived in July 1848; the Leeds Northern main line skirted the town to the east, and the line from York stopped short at Starbeck. Once all three companies had become part of the North Eastern Railway, it drove a new line across the Stray in a cutting and opened a central station, designed by Thomas Prosser, on 1 August 1862. Brunswick closed to passengers the same day.
The station grew as traffic did, with a footbridge in 1873, longer platforms in 1883 and two extra bay platforms in 1897. The 1960s brought the opposite: the routes via Wetherby closed in January 1964, the old station was largely demolished in 1964–65 and replaced by a plainer building, and the line north to Ripon and Northallerton closed in 1967. The line to York survived after being reprieved in 1966. Ticket gates arrived in 2017, and LNER now runs direct trains to London alongside Northern's Leeds–York service.
