About Doncaster

Doncaster, named after the River Don, is best known for two things: horse racing and railways. Racing has been recorded here since the sixteenth century, and the town's railway works built some of the most famous locomotives in Britain, including Flying Scotsman in 1923 and the speed-record holder Mallard in 1938.

Doncaster was granted city status in 2022. Its free Danum Gallery, Library and Museum brings the local museum, an art gallery, the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry museum and a rail heritage centre together under one roof, a short walk from the station.

The station is one of the best-connected in the north, served by seven train companies, and it is where LNER's Leeds trains leave the main line to Scotland. That makes Doncaster a handy base for days out to castles, stately homes and the Yorkshire Wildlife Park in the surrounding countryside.

History of the station

Doncaster's first station was a temporary structure of 1848; the permanent station replaced it in 1850, about 450 yards to the north. The Great Northern Railway's locomotive works grew up alongside, and the Doncaster works went on to build some of the most famous engines in Britain, including Flying Scotsman in 1923 and the speed-record holder Mallard in 1938.

The London and North Eastern Railway gave the station the red-brick booking hall and offices that still face the city, dated by Historic England to 1933, and by 1938 had rebuilt the station in its present form, turning the town-side platform into an island to make room for a fourth through line. A 2006 refurbishment linked the concourse directly to the Frenchgate Centre and the new transport interchange, and platform 0 opened in 2016.
