About Leuchars

Leuchars is a small village in north-east Fife, but its station matters to far more people than live here: it is the railhead for St Andrews, about four and a half miles away as the crow flies, which lost its own station when the branch line closed in 1969.

St Andrews became the ecclesiastical capital of medieval Scotland, and the ruins of its cathedral – the largest church ever built in Scotland – and its bishops' castle still stand on the cliffs. It is also known worldwide as the home of golf, with the Old Course and the R&A World Golf Museum.

North of Leuchars, Tentsmuir is a wild stretch of pine forest, dunes and beach where seals haul out on the sandbanks.

History of the station

Leuchars' first station opened in 1848 on the line to Tayport, about 900 metres north of today's site, and became the junction for St Andrews in 1852. When the Tay Bridge route to Dundee was built, a new Leuchars Junction station opened on the present site on 1 June 1878, just south of the junction for the bridge, with an island platform and bays for the St Andrews and Tayport trains.

On 30 June 1913 the station buildings burned down, in a fire widely blamed on suffragettes, and the present buildings date from the rebuilding that followed. The Tayport line closed in 1967 and the St Andrews branch on 6 January 1969; the bays were filled in, and the station became Leuchars (for St Andrews), the railhead for the town ever since.
